Bitwise’s Hougan says Q3 charts point to ‘crypto spring’

Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan says Q3 may have been “one of the best quarters in crypto’s history,” arguing a sharp rebound in crypto prices and growing onchain markets point to the start of “crypto spring.”

In its quarterly market review published Thursday, Bitwise reported a 46.4% quarterly gain in its large-cap crypto index, along with $6 billion in US spot Bitcoin ETF inflows that brought year-to-date net flows back into positive territory.

The growth extended beyond the price of cryptocurrencies. The value of tokenized equities rose 65.5% to nearly $3.2 billion, while open interest on decentralized perpetual futures hit a new record near $26 billion, with a growing share tied to stocks, commodities, foreign exchange and pre-IPO shares.

Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer led by billionaire Elon Musk, continues to hold nearly $1 billion worth of Bitcoin (BTC), highlighting its long-term commitment to the cryptocurrency despite years of market volatility.According to blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence, Tesla held approximately 8,430 BTC as of October 13, 2026. At recent Bitcoin prices, the company's cryptocurrency holdings are valued at roughly $960 million, placing Tesla among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders.The substantial holdings reflect Tesla's decision to maintain its exposure to Bitcoin even as the cryptocurrency market experienced significant price fluctuations, regulatory uncertainty, and major industry disruptions.Tesla first entered the cryptocurrency market in February 2021, announcing a $1.5 billion Bitcoin investment that attracted widespread attention from institutional investors and the broader financial industry.The investment initially generated considerable returns as Bitcoin prices surged in the following weeks. At one point, Tesla's cryptocurrency holdings reportedly exceeded $2 billion in value, eventually reaching approximately $2.5 billion during the market rally.However, the electric vehicle giant subsequently reduced its Bitcoin exposure through several transactions. In 2021, Tesla sold approximately 4,670 BTC before making additional adjustments to its cryptocurrency portfolio during the market turbulence surrounding the Terra (LUNA) collapse in May 2022.Despite these earlier sales, Tesla has maintained a relatively stable Bitcoin position since 2022, with its holdings remaining near 8,430 BTC.At that time, the remaining Bitcoin reserves were valued at approximately $250 million.
