Crypto futures open interest rose 2% to $102 billion in the past 24 hours. However, flat-to-negative funding rates and cumulative volume delta suggest the buildup is driven by cautious bearish bets rather than fresh long exposure.

Options Positioning Tilts Defensive

$BTC options carry $1.93 billion in notional value across 26,948 contracts. The put-to-call ratio sits at 0.97, nearly balanced but with a slight defensive lean. Max pain rests at $69,000, just below spot price.

$ETH positioning tells a sharper story. With $394 million in notional value across 186,732 contracts, Ethereum’s put-to-call ratio has climbed to 1.20.

That means put buyers outnumber call buyers by a significant margin, signaling hedging activity rather than directional conviction. Max pain for $ETH sits at $2,000, roughly 5% below its current price of $2,110.

Greeks.live analysts noted that implied volatility across major maturities has pulled back sharply. The monthly volatility risk premium (VRP) dropped from +2% to -9% in a single day.

Witnesses Were No Secret, Government Says
On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that the US Justice Department urged a federal judge to reject Bankman-Fried’s request for a retrial, arguing that the defense hasn’t come close to clearing the legal bar required to get one.

At the center of the fight is testimony from two former FTX executives — Ryan Salame and Daniel Chapsky — whom the defense says could have weakened the government’s case against Bankman-Fried at trial.

Prosecutors aren’t buying it. Both men were known to the defense long before the 2023 trial began, according to court documents cited by Bloomberg.

That matters because a defendant seeking a new trial on the basis of fresh witness testimony must show the evidence was genuinely unknown and unavailable at the time of the original proceedings. If the defense had access to those witnesses before, the argument falls apart under the law.

SBF filed the retrial motion in February, claiming that what Salame and Chapsky could say now would undercut the government’s account of FTX’s financial state before the exchange collapsed in late 2022.

The logic behind this arms race revolves around the assumption that as Al agents become the main players in economic activity, the traditional 2-3% transaction fees of credit cards will gradually become obsolete, replaced by extremely low-fee stablecoin payment protocols. In February of this year, a lengthy scenario report from Citrini Research predicted this future, causing Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to lose 5-7% of their market capitalization in a single day.

Is this an overreaction by the market, or capital pricing in future value? It remains to be seen. However, a significant gap remains between ideal and reality: while the x402 protocol's monthly transaction volume was still only $24 million, the global e-commerce market was already a behemoth of $6.88 trillion. This inevitably raises the question: is this a groundbreaking strategic move, or a reckless gamble that mortgages the future?

The arms race in the Al payment sector has begun, but the battlefield is yet to be formed.
