Strategy founder Michael Saylor made a noteworthy assessment of Bitcoin amid discussions about the impact of AI technologies on the global economy. Saylor described Bitcoin as “digital capital resilient to AI-driven transformations.”

Saylor’s remarks came in response to comments from technology investor and former Meta Platforms executive Chamath Palihapitiya, who suggested that artificial intelligence could erode companies’ competitive advantages faster than expected.

According to Palihapitiya, rapid advancements in artificial intelligence could weaken companies’ long-term growth potential and make their stock valuations more dependent on short-term profitability.

Saylor argued that in such an environment, investor capital might shift towards assets less affected by technological shifts. According to him, Bitcoin stands out as a suitable asset due to its limited supply and decentralized nature. Saylor stated that Bitcoin could assume the role of “digital capital” in the global financial system.

Palihapitiya had previously suggested that a 30 to 40 percent drop in long-term asset values could create a significant shift in global markets. In this scenario, he noted, investors might turn to lower-risk assets such as infrastructure projects or short-term government bonds.

On the other hand, Palihapitiya also raised the issue that quantum computers could pose a potential threat to cryptographic systems in the future. Saylor argued that such a development would affect not only Bitcoin but the entire digital ecosystem, including internet infrastructure, banking systems, and artificial intelligence platforms, making a comprehensive technological update inevitable.

The price of Bitcoin has recently hit a six-week high and stood at $75,937 on March 17, as more than $330 million in short positions were liquidated in the last 24 hours.

The price skyrocketed to touch an intraday high of $75,937 on Tuesday, and meanwhile, it broke over the $75,000 resistance for the first time since early February. The shift over the prominent psychological level initiated a market-wide rally, having altcoins like MemeCore, FET and Zcash in leading positions with double-digit rallies on the same day.

The increase in the price resulted in large-scale liquidations in overleveraged crypto markets. As per the data released by CoinGlass, around $498 million was liquidated, having more than $330 million coming from short positions as traders shut bearish positions opened in the early February market sell-off.

The Other Reason

Talking about Bitcoin, it alone stood for $118 million of those short liquidations. One more prominent reason behind today’s rebound can be attributed to consistent inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, indicating strong institutional demand.

Data from SoSoValue reveals that the 12 U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs drew in more than $200 million in the last day, stretching their inflow streak to 6 straight days that drew in about $1 billion in total.

Investors are also looking at Bitcoin as a safe-haven asset at the time of geopolitical tension in the Middle East, mainly since traditional safe-haven assets like gold and silver have shown relative weakness in the past few days.

Currently, the upcoming prominent resistance level that traders are expecting sits at $79,000, witnessed in February, and lines up with the 50% Fibonacci retracement level. A sharp breakout from this level could take the price to as high as $89,850.

While the tool shows that there is a 0% chance that the Fed will actually hike interest rates, especially as the Fed has been leaning toward a more dovish stance over the last year.

Bitcoin BTC$74,074.35 briefly touched $75,912 early Tuesday before pulling back to $74,372, but the intraday volatility is less interesting than the weekly picture beneath it.

CoinDesk reported earlier Tuesday that the push above $75,000 was driven by derivatives activity rather than fresh buying, specifically the closure of large $60,000 put positions that forced market makers to buy spot bitcoin as they rebalanced.

The rapid pullback below $74,400, a former support level from April 2025, confirmed that traders aren't willing to chase above that level without a fundamental catalyst.

Every major token is up at least 5% over seven days. Ether climbed 13.3% to $2,316. xrp rose 11% to $1.53, olana gained 9.7% to $93.92. Dogecoin added 9.5% to $0.10, back above a dime. BNB rose 5% to $676. This is the broadest sustained rally since before the Iran war began, and it's happening heading into the most consequential Fed meeting in months.

But the institutional flow data underneath the rally is real and getting harder to dismiss. CF Benchmarks analyst Mark Pilipczuk noted in an email that spot bitcoin ETFs drew roughly $767 million in net inflows last week, the third consecutive week of positive flows and a sharp reversal from the five-week, $3 billion-plus outflow streak earlier in the year.

The gold convergence trade is another signal worth watching. Year-to-date through mid-March, GLD returned roughly 16% while IBIT lost approximately 19%. But that gap has narrowed sharply, with bitcoin outperforming gold by 13.2% since early March. The 90-day correlation between the two shifted from -0.27 to +0.29 over six months. The "digital gold" narrative that looked dead in February is getting oxygen again.
