South Korea has started laying the groundwork for a new tracking system designed to impose taxes on profits from cryptocurrency investments.

An AI Crypto Tracking System
According to The Korea Times, the National Tax Service (NTS) announced this Thursday that they are moving ahead with an AI-driven system to track crypto investment gains as they prepare to start taxing virtual asset profits from January 2027. The NTS said that the system “is expected to serve our goal of collecting individuals’ virtual asset transaction data starting in 2027”.

A $2 Million Project
In order to achieve this, the NTS issued a tender for what they call a “Comprehensive System for Virtual Asset Transaction Analysis”. There, they detailed that the project has a budget of around ₩3 billion ($2 million) and that the designing of the system will start in April. A pilot operation for the system should be ready to begin in November, after passing multiple tests runs, and be ready to fully launch between November and December.

The notice was uploaded to an online bidding system run by the Public Procurement Service, the agency in charge of sourcing goods and services for the government and affiliated bodies. A winning contractor is expected to be chosen and signed within this month.

A New Era Of Crypto Surveillance
With this new system, the NTS plans to aggregate data from domestic exchanges, blockchain analytics and existing tax databases, leveraging AI and machine learning to detect unusual patterns and potential tax evasion.

This recent update follows past January NTS’s unveiling of a new “control tower” unit created under the 2026 National Tax Administration Operation Plan to coordinate all virtual‐asset tax enforcement and monitoring of offshore flows.

A White House official’s deleted social media post briefly pushed oil prices lower — only for them to snap back hard after US intelligence detected signs that Iran was moving to mine the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s daily oil supply.

A Deleted Post And A Market Whipsaw
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright posted on social media that the US Navy had escorted an oil tanker safely through the Strait, a claim that briefly calmed markets and sent crude prices lower.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt then confirmed the post was false. Wright deleted it. Oil shot back up.

The episode rattled an already jittery market and drew a sharp rebuke from Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who accused Washington of deliberately spreading false information to manipulate oil prices.

“It won’t protect them from the inflationary tsunami they’ve imposed on Americans,” Araghchi said.
The intelligence that triggered the price surge came from CBS White House Correspondent Jennifer Jacobs, who reported that US intelligence assets had picked up signs of Iranian mine deployment activity in the Strait.

Brent crude climbed above $90 a barrel after dipping to an intraday low of around $82. West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, rose above $80 after touching $77 earlier in the session.

Both were still down significantly on the day, but the speed of the recovery underscored how sensitive traders are to any supply threat at this chokepoint.

Trump Warns Of Unprecedented Military Response Vs. Iran
US President Donald Trump escalated the standoff in a Truth Social post, ordering Iran to remove any mines placed in the Strait without delay.

“If, on the other hand, they remove what may have been placed, it will be a giant step in the right direction,” Trump wrote. He warned that failure to comply would bring military consequences at a level, in his words, “never seen before.”

Safe-haven asset?

The action is volatile, but bitcoin BTC$70,436.70 for the moment is continuing to hold just above the $70,000 even as other risk assets sell off across the board.

Helping to send stocks lower, crude oil prices are up more than 10% and nearing $100 per barrel amid concerns about the Hormuz Strait — a key shipping route for oil tankers.

"Stopping Iran is of more concern to me than oil prices," said President Trump on Thursday. Meanwhile, in his first public statement since being appointed Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei said the Strait of Hormuz should remain closed.

"It's becoming clear to everyone that the Strait is far from under control and potentially impossible to control without severe concessions to Iran, boots on the ground, or huge military risks," said Quinn Thompson, founder of Lekker Capital. "Things get dicey from here and when backs are up against the wall, volatility increases."

Nearing the noon hour on the east coast, the Nasdaq is near session lows, down 1.6% and S&P 500 is off 1.2%.

Wiped from the front pages thanks to Iran, but still of major concern are continuing worries about a collapse in private credit. Morgan Stanley (MS) was the latest in a growing series of financial giants to cap redemptions — this one at its $8 billion North Haven Private Income Fund. Shares of Morgan Stanley were down 4% on Thursday, leading declines in the financial sector. JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo were lower by closer to 3%.

In private equity, KKR, Apollo Global, and Ares Management were all sporting 3% to 4% declines.

Gold, meanwhile, was down 0.6% and the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was higher by three basis points to 4.23%.
