Coinbase says new U.S. tax-reporting rules for crypto are cluttered, confusing Cryptocurrency trading giant Coinbase (COIN) said new U.S. tax reporting requirements are overly onerous for many crypto holders and add unnecessary clutter to the country's taxation system.

While the idea is that taxable activity on crypto should be reported in the same way as with equities, for example, the rules require reporting transactions in stablecoins whose value, by definition, doesn't change and the tiny amounts spent on the network fees known as gas.

The Nasdaq-listed exchange is currently sending millions of American crypto holders the new 1099-DA forms designed to bring crypto in line with the rest of finance. While all Coinbase's customers will be affected to some extent, it's the very large group of retail customers who are being hit with an unnecessary administrative burden on what amounts to small transaction flows, said Lawrence Zlatkin, the company's VP of tax.

"Frankly, [small retail] transactional flow is so small, I just don't know why we're spending efforts as a country focused on them," Zlatkin said in an interview. "I just think it just does a disservice to people when you're trading 50 bucks, let's say, that you get a form like this and you have to report gains or losses. That's just not what the tax system is supposed to be about."

For trading platforms, the new system means sharing details of customers' digital asset transactions with the IRS. Customers are copied in using the form, so they can voluntarily reconcile their gains and losses with the tax authority.

As is often the case when trying to align crypto with traditional finance, however, there are challenges.

Vitalik Buterin is urging the Ethereum ecosystem to get bolder about what it builds on top of the chain—while drawing a hard line around the base layer’s core guarantees—arguing that a first-principles reset on applications, wallets, and even culture could be necessary for Ethereum’s next phase.

In a post on X, the Ethereum co-founder said “it’s healthy for us in the Ethereum world to have a more bold and open mindset,” especially on the application layer and “how we see ourselves in the world.” That openness, he argued, should not drift into ambiguity about what Ethereum’s L1 is supposed to protect.

“We should not compromise on core properties: censorship resistance, open source, privacy, security (CROPS),” Buterin wrote. “We should not have ‘open mindedness’ of the type that leaves people with no confidence of what security properties the L1 will still have one year from now.” He added that Ethereum should not backslide into questioning fundamentals like whether “light clients” should “trustlessly verify correctness of the chain.”

Where the rethink should happen, in his framing, is the interface between Ethereum and users: the application stack, its assumptions, and the social conventions that shape what builders consider “serious” work.

Ethereum AI Wallets, But With Guardrails
Buterin tied part of the shift to AI, floating a scenario where “wallets as browser extensions and mobile extensions are dead within a year?” On Farcaster, he made the point more directly: “Pretty obvious that the next iteration of wallets will heavily involve AI.”

Still, he stressed that higher-value usage can’t simply outsource trust to a model. “I would not trust an LLM with multi-million transactions or funds,” he wrote, describing what he sees as the “optimal workflow” for large transfers: “AI proposes a plan, local light client simulates it, you see the action and the simulated outcome and manually confirm

Tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), excluding stablecoins, have surpassed $25 billion in on-chain value, marking a massive expansion from roughly $6.4 billion a year ago. The sector has nearly quadrupled in size, highlighting the rapidly growing interest in bringing traditional financial assets onto blockchain networks.
According to data from RWA.xyz, the milestone reflects a major shift in the industry — from early experimentation toward large-scale institutional deployment.
Over the past year, several major asset managers, including BlackRock, Fidelity, and WisdomTree, have launched tokenized fund products. These initiatives signal that traditional finance is increasingly embracing blockchain infrastructure to improve efficiency, transparency, and global access to financial assets.
One of the fastest-growing segments is tokenized U.S. Treasuries. Data compiled by Nexus Data Labs shows that the number of tokenized Treasury offerings has expanded from around 35 products to more than 50 within a year, demonstrating strong institutional demand for blockchain-based financial instruments.
Currently, six tokenized asset classes have each surpassed $1 billion in on-chain value, including:
• U.S. Treasuries
• Commodities
• Private credit
• Institutional alternative funds
• Corporate bonds
• Non-U.S. government debt
Despite the impressive growth, the sector still faces key structural limitations. Much of the increase in value comes from large, infrequent institutional allocations, rather than active secondary-market trading. Many issuers are prioritizing capital formation and fundraising efficiency instead of liquidity.
