$GRVT Nine Blockchain Organizations Unite as Quantum Threat Looms

Nearly one-third of Bitcoin’s supply could eventually become vulnerable to quantum computers, and a new industry coalition wants to get ahead of the threat. The Quantum Alliance, launched Oct. 15 in Lisbon, brings together nine blockchain organizations to establish common standards for protecting cryptocurrency networks, wallets, and infrastructure.

Its founding contributors estimate that roughly 6.4 million $BTC, including coins associated with Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, have already exposed the public keys that sufficiently powerful quantum machines could exploit. There’s one important catch. Nobody has built a quantum computer capable of pulling off such an attack.

Why 6.4 Million Bitcoin Are in the Crosshairs

The problem comes down to how Bitcoin protects ownership. Bitcoin wallets use digital signatures to prove that someone has permission to spend their coins. When certain wallets make transactions, they reveal public keys that remain permanently visible on the blockchain.
Today’s computers cannot realistically work backward from those public keys to discover the corresponding private keys. But sufficiently advanced quantum computers running a mathematical technique called Shor’s algorithm could potentially crack that protection.

The Quantum Alliance estimates that approximately 6.04 million to 6.4 million $BTC are already exposed in this way, representing roughly 30% of Bitcoin’s total supply. An estimated 1.1 million $BTC associated with Satoshi Nakamoto’s early holdings fall within the broader discussion of potentially vulnerable coins. That doesn’t mean anyone can steal those funds today. The danger depends on quantum computers becoming powerful and reliable enough to break the cryptography.

Bitget to end services for select users in one-off move
Bitget will cut off services for a subset of its users as part of a one-off exercise, the exchange said Saturday.

The Seychelles-headquartered crypto company said its platform would continue operating and assured affectees that their funds remain safe while providing an online resource for verifying their assets.

Bitget said users subject to the changes will receive direct communications by email, in-app messages and/or push notifications explaining the next steps, relevant deadlines and arrangements for withdrawing funds.

The move comes just weeks after a $387.5 million hack that ranks among the biggest security breaches in centralized exchange history. It also comes as the platform faces increasing pressure to meet stricter regulatory requirements worldwide.

The September hack

Bitget suffered a $387.5 million security breach on September 24 after attackers exploited a zero-day flaw in third-party security products to access the exchange’s infrastructure. The hackers drained hot and warm wallets across 11 blockchains, including Ethereum and the $XRP Ledger, stealing nearly 103 million $XRP.

The attackers reportedly gained initial access through security appliances supplied by an external vendor before using privileged access to send forged withdrawal commands through Bitget’s wallet systems, highlighting how vulnerabilities in third-party products can expose crypto platforms to broader security risks.

In response, Bitget suspended withdrawals temporarily and introduced a Recovery Bounty Program on September 25, offering 5% of funds directly frozen or recovered. The exchange also pledged to make users whole through its User Protection Fund, which held more than $464 million until the incident.

Withdrawal services returned gradually from September 28 and were fully restored by October 2. Despite these measures, only around $840,000, equivalent to 0.2% of the
