In contrast, assets such as cash, government bonds, and physical gold carry a 0% risk weight, giving them a major advantage within banking portfolios.
Industry leaders argue that these strict capital requirements discourage banks from participating in the crypto market. According to Jeff Walton, if the United States aims to become the global “crypto capital,” regulatory frameworks must evolve, as the current rules misprice the risk associated with digital assets.
Similarly, Chris Perkins explained that the high capital requirement significantly reduces banks’ return on equity (ROE), a key profitability metric. As a result, many banks avoid holding cryptocurrencies despite growing institutional interest.
The risk weighting policy was originally proposed in 2021 and finalized in 2024, placing cryptocurrencies in the highest risk category under international banking standards. Since then, the rule has faced strong criticism from the crypto industry, which believes it indirectly restricts financial institutions from engaging with digital assets.
However, there are signs that regulators may reconsider the approach. In late 2025, Erik Thedéen suggested that the committee may need to explore a different regulatory framework for crypto risk exposure as the digital asset market continues to grow.

For a third straight session, oil climbed as the widening US-Israel conflict with Iran revived fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow maritime chokepoint that handles roughly a fifth of global oil consumption flows and significant LNG traffic.

According to data from Oilprice.com, Brent rose more than $3 to around $80.9 a barrel after topping $82 intraday, its highest level since January 2025, while WTI hovered near $73.8.

At the same time, the New York Fed conducted $3.0 billion in overnight repos backed by Treasury collateral on March 2, temporarily adding reserves to the banking system. Overnight reverse repos that day totaled $0.627 billion, producing a net effect of about +$2.373 billion in temporary reserve support.

Those two developments, a renewed oil shock and a small but closely watched reserve injection, are colliding in Bitcoin.
