The authors conclude that while the technology represents a legitimate long-term concern, it does not pose an immediate threat to the network.

Published March 11 and authored by Dhruv Bansal, Tom Honzik and David Puell, the report argues that current quantum systems remain far from the capabilities required to compromise Bitcoin's cryptographic foundations.

Bitcoin Quantum Threat Is Distant, Not Immediate The paper's central thesis is straightforward: quantum computing represents a real but gradual risk.

"Our two central arguments are as follows," the authors write. "Quantum is a long-term risk but not an imminent threat. The community must continue to research and make plans for protecting the network as quantum computers improve.'

They add that even if breakthroughs occur, exploiting them against Bitcoin would be costly and slow. "If quantum computing were to affect Bitcoin's cryptography, the process would be protracted and undertaken at meaningful cost to the attacker."

A Bitcoin heatmap shared by Columbus suggests the market is starting to accept price action above a descending channel, while fresh bid liquidity appears across the order book. The chart points to a possible structural shift as support begins to build around lower levels after the recent move higher.

The visual shows dense liquidity clusters both above and below the current trading zone, with notable bid interest forming near the $68,000 area. According to the analysis, that level matches the former channel resistance and may now act as support if Bitcoin pulls back. This kind of retest often helps confirm whether a breakout is holding.

At the same time, the heatmap shows heavier liquidity sitting overhead, especially in the higher price zones. If Bitcoin continues to hold above the broken channel, that overhead liquidity could become the next draw for price. In that case, the market may move quickly toward those levels as traders target areas with larger resting orders.

The chart therefore suggests a two-step structure. First, Bitcoin may revisit the $68,000 zone where bids are already visible. Then, if buyers defend that area, the broader setup could support continuation toward higher liquidity clusters above the current range.

CFTC seeks public comment on prediction markets as regulator issues new advisory

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission [CFTC] has taken new steps toward regulating prediction markets. It issued fresh guidance to exchanges while launching a formal process to consider new rules governing event-based contracts.

In a pair of announcements on 12 March, the agency’s Division of Market Oversight released an advisory addressing the listing of event contracts. 

Also, the commission simultaneously opened an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking [ANPRM] seeking public comment on how prediction markets should be regulated.

The move comes as event-based trading platforms have grown rapidly in popularity, prompting regulators to examine how existing derivatives rules apply to these markets.

Advisory reminds exchanges of regulatory obligations

The CFTC’s Division of Market Oversight said the advisory is intended to help designated contract markets understand their responsibilities when listing event contracts.

The guidance highlights obligations under the Commodity Exchange Act, including compliance with exchange core principles and product submission requirements.

The advisory also notes that prediction markets are expanding into new areas, including contracts tied to sports-related outcomes, which may raise additional regulatory considerations.

A new controversy has emerged within the cryptocurrency community, particularly on “crypto Twitter,” involving US-based exchange Coinbase (COIN).

Rumors are circulating that the exchange is actively opposing the proposed Bitcoin (BTC) de minimis tax exemption, allegedly to promote a regulatory framework that favors stablecoins over Bitcoin.

Coinbase’s Alleged Lobbying
As the US government seeks to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for the crypto industry—especially following Donald Trump’s re-election campaign—tax exemptions have become a focal point in congressional discussions.

In a March 4 interview, Senator Cynthia Lummis mentioned that both the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee are contemplating a $300 exemption, which would allow crypto users to utilize Bitcoin for transactions without incurring capital gains taxes.

“We’re trying to figure out the appropriate criteria for distinguishing when a transaction—such as a sale of Bitcoin—should be subject to capital gains taxes and when it can be used as a straightforward medium of exchange, akin to the US dollar,” explained Lummis.

However, industry insights shared by Marty Bent, managing partner at Ten31, indicate that Coinbase may be lobbying against such exemptions. Bent claimed on social media that the exchange is attempting to “nuke” the Bitcoin exemption while seeking to support stablecoins exclusively.

Allegedly, Coinbase representatives have informed legislators that “No one is using Bitcoin as money. A de minimis exemption for Bitcoin is a handout that will be DOA [dead on arrival].”

Accusations Fly
This revelation has garnered significant attention from leaders within the cryptocurrency sector. Conner Brown, Managing Director at the Bitcoin Policy Institute, expressed concern over the potential implications of such a move.
