U.S. prosecutors are seeking a retrial for Roman Storm, the co-founder of the cryptocurrency mixing service Tornado Cash. This comes after a federal jury issued a mixed verdict in the previous trial. The case has received considerable attention in the cryptocurrency industry because it has the potential to set the stage for the legal accountability of decentralized software developers. Prosecutors in Manhattan are seeking a retrial for Roman Storm on two counts after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in the previous trial.

The Letter For The Retrial

Jay Clayton wrote to Katherine Polk Failla on Monday and asked her to arrange for a retrial of Roman Storm on charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to violate sanctions. The government suggested the period between Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 for the trial, indicating that it could take around three weeks for the process to end. The letter indicated that the government was ready to retry the case as early as between March and May. However, Storm’s defense attorneys indicated to the prosecutors that they could only participate in the process as late as 2026.

During the earlier trial, the jurors found Storm guilty of conspiring to run an unlicensed money transmitting business in association with the crypto mixer known as Tornado Cash. However, the jury did not arrive at a unanimous decision regarding the money laundering charge and sanctions conspiracy charge, which means that these charges are eligible for retrial. Storm continues to stand by his plea of not guilty and had previously moved to dismiss the money transmitting charge. His legal representatives had argued that the prosecution failed to prove that he intended to help illicit actors use his platform. Clayton’s letter also stated that Storm’s legal representatives argued it was premature to seek a retrial until the court resolves

Traders snapped up nearly 600,000 BTC as bitcoin dipped below $70,000, blockchain data show

Bitcoin's $BTC$70,816.15 recent dip triggered heavy trading activity, with nearly 600,000 $BTC changing hands in the $60,000–$70,000 range, according to blockchain data tracked by Glassnode.

In other words, traders went bargain hunting, snapping up nearly 600,000 $BTC ($42.48 billion) in this price band during the correction. Of these, more than 200,000 $BTC were accumulated in the past two weeks alone.

Note that at the start of the year, roughly 997,000 $BTC had last moved within the $60,000–$70,000 range. Since bitcoin’s recent drop below $70,000, that number has jumped to 1.558 million $BTC.

Taken together, it means that nearly 8% of the circulating supply is owned by people who bought their bitcoin in this range, creating a dense cluster of ownership. As such, the $60,000–$70,000 range could act as an important support level going forward.

At press time, bitcoin changed hands above $70,000, trading at levels, which have previously seen thin trading activity. CoinDesk Research has previously highlighted the “air gap” between $70,000 and $80,000, a range where relatively little supply changed hands.

Still, the market is at a point where things could spice up, because analysis by Checkonchain shows that around 40% of bitcoin holders have paid more than $70,000 for their coins.

Bitcoin ETFs see $167M in inflows as BTC surges above $71KUS-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded net inflows on Monday, ending a two-session stretch of withdrawals.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $167 million in net inflows during the session, according to data from SoSoValue.

The inflows followed approximately $577 million in combined outflows on Thursday and Friday.

The renewed demand coincided with a rebound in the price of Bitcoin, which climbed toward $71,000 as broader market sentiment improved.

Altcoin ETFs continue to see selling

While Bitcoin-linked products attracted fresh capital, funds tied to other major cryptocurrencies continued to experience selling pressure.

Exchange-traded funds tracking Ethereum, XRP, and Solana all recorded net outflows on Monday.

Ether ETFs posted $51 million in outflows, XRP funds saw withdrawals of $18 million, and Solana ETFs recorded $2.5 million in outflows, according to SoSoValue.

The declines marked the third consecutive day of withdrawals across altcoin funds.

Ethereum-linked products experienced the largest cumulative losses during the period, with about $225 million exiting over three trading sessions.

Although selling pressure in Ethereum and Solana ETFs appeared to be easing toward the end of the period, XRP funds continued to see larger withdrawals, totalling roughly $41 million since Thursday.

Solana ETFs saw about $16 million in cumulative outflows over the same timeframe.

Notably, the withdrawals occurred even as the underlying cryptocurrencies posted gains of roughly 3% to 5% over the past 24 hours, based on data from CoinGecko.
