Changing Basel rules could unlock 'huge' liquidity for BTC: Analyst

The Basel III rules, which govern bank capital requirements, are set to be updated in 2026, and if Bitcoin ($BTC) receives a lower risk rating in the revised rules, it could potentially trigger a “huge” influx of liquidity into $BTC, according to market analyst Nic Puckrin.

Under the current Basel rules, $BTC and similar digital assets are given a 1,250% risk weight, meaning banks must hold reserve assets at a 1:1 ratio to back any Bitcoin held on their balance sheets, Puckrin said.

These restrictive capital requirements make it “almost impossible” for banks to hold $BTC or offer $BTC-related services, he added. He said:

“The Fed just announced a proposal on how these rules will be implemented in the US, with a 90-day public comment window. If $BTC’s treatment improves even slightly, it could open the door for banks to finally integrate $BTC into the financial system.”

In February, several crypto treasury company executives called for reform of the Basel rules to implement more accommodating risk weights for digital assets that would allow banks to participate in the blockchain economy.

Tech investor and former Coinbase chief technology officer Balaji Srinivasan has called on the crypto industry to develop more financial tools for refugees and stateless people.

In a Saturday post on X, Srinivasan said the number of displaced individuals could grow as global conflicts intensify and economic migration increases. He pointed to examples ranging from Ukrainians fleeing war to workers leaving the Gulf countries amid regional tensions.

Bitcoin traded lower after January producer inflation came in above consensus. That sets up a longer stretch in which rate expectations may steer crypto pricing ahead of the next producer price index (PPI) print on March 18.

January PPI inflation was 2.9% year over year, above the 2.6% consensus estimate. Core PPI (excluding food and energy) at 3.6% year over year versus 3.0% consensus.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the PPI for final demand rose 0.5% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis and 2.9% year over year on an unadjusted basis.

According to the BLS release, the upside in January was concentrated in services, while goods and energy moved lower. Final demand services increased 0.8% on the month, and within services, trade-service margins rose 2.5% (trade indexes measure margins received by wholesalers and retailers).

Final demand goods fell 0.3%. Energy prices dropped 2.7%, including a 5.5% decline in gasoline.

The $BTC Spot ETF flows have not done much in 2026 all together.

But I have no doubt that we will see the cumulative ETF flow into the $100B+ region over the next few years.

Whether price is following the same path is a matter of time in my opinion. Every $ these ETFs absorb from larger OG sellers or short term traders, is a more solid and diversified supply & base built for the long term.

2025 was a good example of that. We saw $20B+ of inflows into the ETFs with BTC ending the year just about in the red. Not ideal obviously price action wise, but the fact we did have these inflows and for the coins to have rotated to the ETFs, makes a more solid base in the future. Imagine what price might have done without those flows after all.

One of Wall Street’s most important voices on digital assets just made a statement about XRP. Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale Investments, told Paul Barron Network that XRP is positioned for a meaningful repricing event, and the trigger is something the entire crypto industry has been waiting on for years: regulatory clarity.Speaking directly on the question of whether XRP would be repriced if the proposed crypto legislation passes, Pandl was unambiguous.

“I do,” he said. “I think we would see a repricing across a range of assets, certainly including XRP.”

His confidence is rooted in what he is already seeing in the market. Grayscale’s GXRP product, the firm’s XRP-focused investment vehicle, has been drawing consistent and growing demand from institutional investors. Pandl described those investors as looking ahead to clarity and asking what it means to unlock further value in these networks.

In other words, sophisticated money is already positioning. The repricing, in his view, has not happened yet because the regulatory framework that would justify it has not arrived yet.

The conversation zeroed in on a specific and largely underreported element of the proposed crypto legislation: Section 205, which would require projects to demonstrate their blockchain meets a threshold of decentralisation to qualify as a mature blockchain under the law.

For Ripple, this clause carries direct implications. It would require the company to restructure or potentially burn portions of its XRP holdings to meet the 20% mature blockchain component requirement. Brad Garlinghouse, Ripple’s CEO, has publicly stated he believes the odds of the legislation passing are high, though the window for passage is narrowing.

Equity perps been popping on my CT feed lately, so I dove into @Delphi_Digital’s excellent report by @trevor_flipper.

Here's a simple breakdown ↓

1. What even are equity perps?

You know how you can trade BTC/ETH with leverage on Hyperliquid?

Equity perps are the exact same thing but for stocks. AAPL, TSLA, NVDA.

Deposit USDC, pick a stock, go long or short with leverage, 24/7.

2. The problems right now:

Expensive. You're paying 11–31% annually just to hold a position vs 6.5% if you used a normal broker.

Order books are thin. Big orders move the price a lot.

Trade outside US market hours and spreads blow out badly. The price on the perp drifts away from the real stock price overnight.

3. So why does anyone care?

Because crypto perps looked exactly like this in 2024.

Everyone said the same thing: too expensive, books too thin, not worth it.

Then something changed.

Spot BTC launched directly on Hyperliquid and traders started buying real BTC and shorting the perp to collect that expensive funding as free yield.

That single flow cut BTC funding costs nearly in half within months, from ~18% down to ~9%. ETH followed the exact same path, dropping from ~15% to ~8%.

4. Equity perps are next:

US regulatory clarity is coming. NYSE is moving toward 24/7 trading.

Once you can trade the actual stock alongside the perp on the same platform, the same trade happens:

Buy real AAPL, short AAPL perp, collect funding.

That flow anchors the price, deepens the books, and compresses costs automatically.
