Supporters say this would strengthen cooperation between crypto companies and law enforcement agencies. The temporary freeze could stop money from being stolen or illegal funds from being used within minutes.

Legal experts say that the proposal raises several complicated issues. Andrew Rossow, who was a public affairs attorney, explained that the banks already have limited powers to delay suspicious transactions. Another concern involves transparency rules. Bitcoin (BTC) slipped after the last week’s brief rally, as a surge in oil prices influenced Asian equity markets on March 9. In the last 24 hours, the price slipped around 1.87% and stood at $66,010.

It also showed a 10% drop from the latest peak of $73,500 noted on March 5. This pullback took bitcoin back to the point where it was witnessed before the brief surge. An analyst at Zeus Research, Dominick John, noted that this slip to $66k is mainly influenced by macro-driven pullback.

He further added that increased geopolitical risk, mainly the absence of de-escalation in the Middle East, took markets into a more risk-off posture, while increasing oil prices are adding to inflation issues and tightening global financial conditions.

Because of sustaining tensions in the Middle East, the price of crude oil increased to cross $110 per barrel, surging 22% on the day and 72% in the last month, as per Trading Economics.

On March 8, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a short-term increase in oil prices is a very small price to pay, mentioning that prices would stabilise once the destruction of the Iranian nuclear threat is terminated.

Bitcoin $BTC$68,153.83 and the broader crypto market stayed resilient Monday as an oil price surge above $100 shook Asian markets and triggered a drop in U.S. stock futures. The crypto calm may be shattered if bitcoin moves outside the $60,000- $75,000 range, data on major market participants' positions suggests.

It's solidly within that range at the moment, though. The leading cryptocurrency by market value has risen over 3% since early Asian hours to trade around $68,000. The rally follows a week of back-and-forth action that saw the price rise to nearly $74,000 only to drop back to $67,000 over the weekend. The CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20), ether ($ETH), $XRP ($XRP), solana (SOL) saw similar increases.

This resilience to the war in the Middle East and risk-off sentiment in global stocks likely stems from the earlier outperformance of U.S. equities and the cryptocurrency's oversold status. Nothing reflects the crypto calm better than $BTC's 30-day implied volatility index, BVIV, which remains steady around 60%. Wall Street's volatility indexes, meantime, the equity VIX, the oil VIX and the gold VIX have all surged to multiweek highs, indicating panic in traditional markets.

Bitcoin market makers — those entities tasked with creating order book liquidity and ensuring seamless trading — are "short gamma" at $60,000 and $75,000. This means that if the market moves beyond those levels, they could trade in the direction of the price movement to rebalance their net exposure back to neutral. In other words, they may sell $BTC as its price drops and buy when it rises, accentuating volatility.

According to the crypto analytics firm, BTC whales — holding between 10 and 10,000 coins — acquired significant amounts of the flagship cryptocurrency between February 23 and March 3.

This heavy accumulation by this investor cohort occurred as the Bitcoin price oscillated between $62,900 and $69,600. However, after the market leader climbed above $70,000 and toward $74,000, these whales started offloading their purchases, selling off about 66% of their freshly-acquired coins.

At the same time, retail investors — entities holding below 0.01 Bitcoin — have been increasing their exposure to the world’s largest cryptocurrency since falling back below $70,000. Santiment noted that “when retail buys while whales sell, it typically signals that the correction is not yet over.”

According to the blockchain firm, the correlation between the 10-10k investor cohort and the Bitcoin price action is currently extremely high. “The reaction time between their moves and price action is almost instantaneous right now, making this the highest-value signal for short-term direction,” Santiment revealed.
