Bitcoin Miners’ AI Shift May Create New Overhang, Lekker Capital CIO Warns
Lekker Capital CIO Quinn Thompson argues on X that collapsing mining economics, combined with a growing shift by public miners toward AI and high-performance compute, could turn corporate $BTC treasuries into a fresh source of market supply.

“A large underappreciated headwind for Bitcoin is the disaster that which is mining economics. The only way this heals is through a decline in hashrate, which is being spearheaded by the AI compute first movers like CORZ, WULF, CIFR, IREN, etc.,” Thompson wrote.

The chart Thompson shared, frames the problem visually. It shows aggregate bitcoin holdings across major listed miners climbing sharply through 2024 and 2025 before rolling over in 2026. Thompson’s argument is not that the AI pivot is bearish in structural terms.

On the contrary, lower hashrate and less uneconomic competition could improve mining industry health over time. His point is that the transition itself is expensive, and that capex-heavy AI buildouts may force miners to liquidate $BTC that had previously been treated as strategic treasury.

“While helpful to long-term health and sustainability of the network economics, it presents a dilemma for prices in the near-term as Bitcoin miners hold almost 80,000 Bitcoin on their balance sheets. As these companies pivot away from $BTC mining, they 1) need capital to fund the AI buildout capex requirements and 2) have no reason to hold any $BTC on their balance sheet (not that they should have before either),” he argued.

Rising oil prices, higher U.S. Treasury yields, and expectations that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates elevated have contributed to reduced demand for risk assets, including cryptocurrencies. As Bitcoin faces downside pressure, activity across decentralized finance continues to develop, with Mutuum Finance reporting more than $230 million in total value locked on its V1 protocol on testnet as it expands its lending and borrowing protocol.

Bitcoin faces downside risk toward $65,000

Bitcoin has slipped below the $70,000 support level, declining about 4.8% over the past seven days and trading near $69,385 at the time of writing. The asset now sits roughly 29% below its year-to-date high of around $97,500 and approximately 45% below its all-time high, reflecting continued pressure on the broader crypto market.

Macroeconomic conditions remain a key factor influencing investor sentiment. The latest U.S. core CPI data came in line with market expectations, reinforcing the likelihood that the Federal Reserve may maintain elevated interest rates for a longer period. According to CME FedWatch data, there is a 99.3% probability that rates will remain unchanged at the March FOMC meeting, while expectations for an April rate cut have declined significantly.

At the same time, U.S. Treasury yields have continued to rise, making traditional fixed-income assets more attractive compared to higher-risk investments. Higher yields tend to reduce liquidity in speculative markets, which can place additional pressure on assets such as cryptocur

BTC's Black Friday performance lived up to expectations. The price simply rose initially before falling. However, yesterday's double-top test at 74 and subsequent pullback were entirely anticipated.

Currently, the price is trading within the upper-middle Bollinger Band range. We'll see if the middle band can provide support. If it doesn't, the price will continue to fall; conversely, a rebound is possible after this decline. My suggestion is to first look for opportunities to rise based on the middle band support.

Robert Mitchnick, Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management company, made exclusive statements about the company’s new staking-backed Ethereum ETF (ETHB). Mitchnick stated that this new product is a “golden key” for institutional investors.

Mitchnick, highlighting the fundamental differences between Bitcoin and Ethereum, stated that Bitcoin is positioned as “digital gold” and an alternative currency, while Ethereum is a technology-focused investment based on blockchain innovation. He noted that ETHB offers investors the opportunity to share not only in price increases but also in the economic functioning of the network (staking).

Mitchnick, noting that the launch of Bitcoin ETFs (IBITs) has provided a great convenience for investors, said, “An Ethereum ETF with added staking features becomes a clear solution that allows investors to access Ethereum in the easiest and most cost-effective way.”

Mitchnick noted that despite the volatility in the crypto markets, ETF investors have a long-term perspective, pointing out that even when the Bitcoin price fell by nearly 50% from its peak, inflows into IBIT (BlackRock Bitcoin ETF) remained positive. According to 2025 data, IBIT was the only fund among the top 20 most injected ETFs worldwide that appeared on the list despite negative returns.

Mitchnick stated that approximately 90% of ETF investors consist of financial advisors, individual investors, and institutional funds, and that this group tends to accumulate by “buying at the dip.” He added that the remaining 10% are generally hedge funds that arbitrage with futures contracts.

This Thursday, Metaplanet announced the launch of its new venture capital and asset management divisions. Through these, approximately 4 billion yen will be allocated to the development of Bitcoin infrastructure, with funds channeled via Metaplanet Ventures and Metaplanet Asset Management to finance startups, project incubators, and open-source grants over the next three years.


The Tokyo-listed firm seeks to consolidate Japan as a central hub for digital asset companies, focusing on critical segments such as payments, custody, and BTC derivatives. Although Metaplanet reported annual losses of $605 million due to market volatility, its CEO, Simon Gerovich, maintains that after establishing a solid regulatory framework, the country now requires the technical infrastructure to lead the industry. The initiative aims to diversify the company’s revenue streams and reduce its direct exposure to token prices.

In summary, Metaplanet is betting on the long-term growth of the Japanese Bitcoin ecosystem by investing in local talent and infrastructure.
