Former Los Angeles police officer Eric Hailum was sentenced to life in prison plus 15 years for stealing $350,000 in cryptocurrency from a 17-year-old. In 2024, Hailum and three accomplices, posing as police, broke into the teen's apartment and, under threat of death, took a hard drive containing his crypto wallet keys. The judge rejected Hailum's appeal for a retrial, stating the crime was driven by "pure and absolute greed."
The victim had amassed wealth through cryptocurrency, including fraud, but the judge condemned Hailum's abuse of authority as "vile and outrageous." Hailum must serve much of his 15-year term before beginning his life sentence and can seek parole after seven years. He faces additional charges for insurance fraud and another alleged crypto robbery; his accomplices await trial.
The case highlights a rise in physical attacks against crypto holders as digital security improves. Security expert Jameson Lopp tracks such incidents globally, listing 32 in 2024, 74 in 2025, and 49 so far in 2026. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported 77 incidents in France alone in the first half of 2026.
Institutional demand for cryptocurrency ETFs expanded broadly. Bitcoin ETFs recorded a second consecutive strong session, with a net inflow of $211.49 million. BlackRock's IBIT led with $170.35 million, followed by Fidelity's FBTC with $19.58 million. No major Bitcoin ETF experienced outflows, and combined assets reached $78.26 billion. Total August inflows after just two trading days already exceeded July's entire net inflow, signaling a potential monthly recovery.
Ethereum ETFs also returned to net inflows of $53.75 million, led by BlackRock's ETHA ($42.46 million). Solana ETFs saw a $1 million inflow solely to Morgan Stanley's staking-focused MSOL. XRP and HYPE ETFs saw no activity.
Separately, BlackRock filed for a 1-for-3 reverse stock split for its ETHA ETF, effective October 6. This will increase the per-share price to approximately $42 (from ~$14 currently), which analysts say could reduce trading spreads and lower effective transaction costs for investors.
The company Strategy, founded by Michael Saylor, has announced its goal to become the world's largest company by market capitalization. According to its official video titled "The Goal of Strategy: To Become the World's Largest Company by Market Capitalization," the plan is based on a "three-wheeled" model centered around Bitcoin, its STRC digital credit platform, and its MSTR stock. The strategy aims to achieve this by holding the largest Bitcoin reserves, providing the most reliable digital credit through STRC, and enhancing the investment appeal of MSTR shares. The company intends to fund its digital lending operations by issuing STRC, use the proceeds to strengthen MSTR's financial structure, and acquire more Bitcoin with increased capital. Strategy claims this system can continuously increase the amount of Bitcoin per share. Long-term targets include achieving a 30% annual return from Bitcoin, selling digital loans equivalent to 10-20% of its Bitcoin reserves yearly, and doubling the Bitcoin-per-share metric within seven years. The plan posits that digital lending revenue will bolster Bitcoin accumulation, allowing MSTR investors to benefit more from reserve growth.
Bitcoin held above the $64,000 mark on Wednesday, though bullish momentum remained subdued amid heightened political tensions surrounding the upcoming vote on the CLARITY Act. The cryptocurrency managed a slight upward trajectory from its August 4th consolidation range of $63,000-$63,600, repeatedly finding support at $64,000. However, rallies were consistently capped around $64,400. After a brief dip to $63,900, Bitcoin rebounded to a peak of $64,706 and was trading near $64,600 by late morning EST, up 1.1% for the day. This modest rise again forced liquidations, with $45 million of nearly $52 million in Bitcoin leveraged liquidations coming from short positions.
Analysts view the CLARITY Act as a key catalyst for Bitcoin's 2024 gains, but its passage appears increasingly unlikely with less than 48 hours before the congressional recess. The Senate's August 5th agenda omitted the bill entirely, highlighting a lack of bipartisan consensus. While proponents like Coinbase's Ryan VanGrak and Senator Cynthia Lummis remain optimistic about a potential September vote, prediction markets have turned pessimistic. Polymarket users now price the odds of the CLARITY Act becoming law this year at just 15%, down from 27% earlier in the week.
Michael Saylor discusses Bitcoin, digital credit, and corporate treasury strategies in a recent roundtable. He explains that while Bitcoin remains "digital capital" with no counterparty risk, its ~40% annual volatility makes it unsuitable for most institutional and retail capital. To attract this capital, he advocates for Bitcoin-backed "digital credit" and "digital currency" products. These offer low volatility against fiat currencies, generate yield, and compete with traditional money market funds, stablecoins, and other yield-bearing crypto assets.
Saylor clarifies that these products are not meant to replace direct Bitcoin ownership but to onboard capital that otherwise wouldn't enter the Bitcoin ecosystem. He provides examples: during a period when Bitcoin fell 50%, his company's digital credit products (STRC, SATA) delivered positive returns of 3-4%, demonstrating their ability to strip out ~90% of Bitcoin's volatility.
He frames "digital currency" as a fiat-referenced, yield-bearing, stable-value asset backed by Bitcoin, designed to meet the needs of the global capital pool. This approach, he argues, can expand the Bitcoin network's reach by 10x to 100x more effectively than pure education.
The discussion also covers corporate finance for Bitcoin treasury companies. Saylor argues that equity issuance is not inherently dilutive if done above net asset value per share and if the acquired asset (Bitcoin or cash) supports future value creation. He distinguishes between debt with maturity dates and hybrid capital like preferred shares (e.g., STRC), which offer issuer options and do not force liquidation. Evaluating these companies requires modeling based on future Bitcoin price and volatility assumptions, not relying on a single metric like mNAV (market-adjusted net asset value). The business models are still evolving, and investors must analyze full disclosures to form a complete view.
